I'll give you all I've got to give if you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give but what I got I'll give to you
I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love!

Hi, I'm Leslie! Welcome to my online creative central!

Mostly, this journal is about giving. It's about me using the skills God has given me, to give some pleasure and contemplation to other people with my creativity. It's about me giving of my time and patience, and you giving of your time, attention, and thoughts--which are infinitely more valuable to me than money.

'Cuz like the man said, it can't buy you love--or the creative spark, for that matter.

Friending

I post a lot of stuff on this journal, with different levels of privacy and... publicity, I guess? You get the idea.

I post sketches, the most recent of which are public. I also have a few samples of my writing up for public viewing. For a bit more info on the characters and settings involved, see my guide below.

Also, I post studies for works-in-progress, along with most of my writing and maybe the odd worldbuilding ramble. THOSE things (and my older sketch-posts) are friends-only, so friend this journal and comment on this entry asking to be added and telling me where you heard about me, to get at the super-secret stuff. Let me know if you'd prefer to see art only or writing only; if you don't say, I'll assume you want only the art.

I'm usually pretty willing to add folks, so don't be shy!

All content posted here © Leslie A. Brown, unless specified otherwise.

All characters are mine, too, unless specified otherwise or just obviously not mine (i.e. Batman, the Beatles , etc). I haven't trademarked any of my characters, but I do hope you won't try to make money off any of them.

If you want to use my art for some purpose, please ask me. I don't mind sharing the love, but some of these characters are not my property. Also, even if I do give you permission to use it, you can't claim to be the artist. That's the kind of thing that gets heads eaten.

However, and I want to make this clear, if you want to use my art for reference, inspiration, or learning purposes in your own artistic endeavors, go for broke. I love it when people do that. And please, feel free to let me know about it! I'd love to see how I may've inspired/helped you!

My writing is rather stricter; you should ask me if you want to use a story or poem for some purpose, but unless I know you very well and am thoroughly clear on the use to which you're planning to put it (and any possible remuneration), the answer will probably be no. I take this writing stuff seriously.

Content

I write and draw a lot. Writing is my life, and art is my outlet. Most of my art and writing is connected to one or another of my projects:

The Age of Demi-Gods: In an age just a little before recorded history, all the old gods and legends are true, all at the same time (well, except Ragnarok). Chaos and freefloating magic ensue. Mostly this is inhabited by a few lonely characters and a vague idea about bickering demigodly siblings which probably equals WAR. aod

The Little Parallel Universe: Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages with a healthy dose of fairies, magic, and of course, DINOSAURS. History is not going according to plan, and the Germanic Empire is just one example. Maybe King Arthur can save the day. Home of Sword, my big epic fantasy novel-in-progress I've never let anyone read much of, my half-finished '04 NaNo, and a few other things. Theo's true home. lpu

The Monster-Hunters: Ghosties and ghoulies and long-legged beasties are the order of the day for the underground world of a slightly askew Victorian/Edwardian world (kinda steampunky). This is actually a hideously violent, ridiculously grim, and completely cool shared-world project I'm involved in with the noble denizens of [info]monsterhunters. Werewolves may be involved (see, for instance, Wir-Wulf and A Visit to Cadogan Street, my only significant MH works. They're about Theo being a werewolf. Yeah). mh 1968

The Robo-Beatles: One geek named Rocky Raccoon. Four robot named John, Paul, George, and Ringo. One band that can't seem to stick together. The possibility of a magical virus and pizza-delivery robots lurking on the horizon. Hijinks ensue. I've done one comic strip (Eight Days a Week), a few short-shorts, and two chapters of a longer story (Mad Day Out) in this setting. robobeatles wonderland

Grail: A halfhearted dystopia (your guide is the misanthropic Tim Prester, who hates your mom) where even the bureaucracy is pretty unenthusiastic about anything--except maybe the suppression of magic wherever it may be found. Including your brain. Technically this isn't a setting of its own, but no matter. Gratuitous use of Grail themes may be involved here. grail

The Menagerie: In the aftermath of a terrible magical catastrophe that literally destroyed history, the world is so messed-up that we've got electric guitars and gaslight, and nobody realises this is a problem. The laws of mathematics occasionally take a holiday, and clairvoyants are trying to contact electricity to ask it a few hard questions. Plus fairies, werewolves, and British cities transplanted into France. Also rock'n'roll. It's a little bit steampunk and a tiny bit dieselpunk and a lot of crazy. Major projects in this setting include three NaNovels and a series of short stories called And Great Was Its Fall (but more frequently referred to as SB/MF, short for "Silver Beat/Menagerie Fugue") menagerie

i-Eltheniel: A world of talking animals, dishonored knights, trickster heroes, and possibly the source of a whole lot of trouble for a whole other world. Basically my old anthroverse, complete with half-conceived model languages, all badly in need of a revamp. The first few chapters of a really bad novel and a planned-but-never-written series of faux folktales exist somewhere in my files. There they will stay. i-eltheniel

Matriarchy: An extremely low-level worldbuilding project which I generally don't discuss, but from which a few doodles escape periodically. It's an excuse to play with matriarchal social structures, conlangs, and fictional religions. matriarchy

I also write poetry on occasion, and draw the odd bit of fanart, both of established pop culture (plus a few more obscure fandoms) and my friends' ideas.

I've also participated in NaNoWriMo twice, and part of my second NaNovel is on this journal. nanowrimo

Etc.

Anything I post here is open for constructive criticism, should you care to offer it. In the case of art it's more a future-reference thing, but in the case of writing I am always revising or tweaking, so feel free to offer suggestions (but only if you want to! I also like pure positive feedback--who doesn't?--and I know writing good critique is difficult).

When I reply to your comments, I am often logged into my personal account. So if [info]bootheel thanks you for your comments, rest assured that's just me.

On a related note, at this stage I generally only reply to a comment if it's a) asking a question, or b) inspires me to reply for some other reason. I don't reply to every comment, but if you asked a question or left a fairly long, detailed comment, you'll probably get a reply eventually. It can take me a while, admittedly.
